Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information is collected when you visit universityofmichiganoutofstatetuition.shop (“the site”), operated by Ann Arbor Tuition Ledger (“we”, “us”), and the choices you have. The site is an independent guide and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the University of Michigan.
Information we collect
Server logs
Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically records basic technical information when you load a page: your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring page, the pages you request, and the date and time of each request. We use these logs to keep the site running, diagnose problems and protect against abuse. Logs are kept only as long as needed for those purposes.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. The site itself does not require cookies to work and has no accounts, logins or forms. The cost calculator runs entirely in your browser and does not send your inputs anywhere. Third parties such as advertising partners may set cookies as described below.
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message. We use it only to reply and to correct the site, and we do not add you to any mailing list.
Advertising and Google AdSense
We may use Google AdSense to show advertising. When ads are enabled:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies, including the DoubleClick cookie, enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You can learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
- You may opt out of personalized advertising from Google by visiting Ads Settings.
- You can opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info/choices.
Where required by law, a consent message provided by Google will ask for your choices before personalized ads are shown.
Analytics
We may use a privacy-respecting analytics service to understand which pages are read and how visitors find the site. Such services typically collect aggregated data such as page views, approximate location derived from IP address, device type and referrer, and may use cookies or similar technologies. We use this information only to improve the site and do not use it to identify individual visitors.
How we use and share information
We use the information above to operate, secure and improve the site and, if ads are enabled, to support it financially. We do not sell personal information for money. We share information only with service providers that help us run the site (such as hosting and, if enabled, advertising and analytics providers), or when required by law.
Your US state privacy rights (including California)
Residents of California and other US states with consumer privacy laws may have rights to know what personal information is collected, to request access to or deletion of it, to correct it, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Because advertising cookies may count as sharing under some laws, you can opt out using the Google and industry tools linked above, by blocking third-party cookies in your browser, or by using a browser that sends a Global Privacy Control signal. To make a request, email us at the address below. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
Visitors from the EEA, UK and Switzerland (GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we process limited personal data (such as IP addresses in server logs) on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating and securing the site, and process advertising cookies only with your consent where required. You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing of your data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children’s privacy
The site is a general-audience reference for college-bound students and families and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, consistent with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Data security and links
The site is served over HTTPS. Links to other websites, including University of Michigan pages, are governed by those sites’ own privacy policies.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site changes, for example when advertising is enabled. The effective date at the top shows when it was last revised.
