About Ann Arbor Tuition Ledger
Independence statement
Independent guide. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the University of Michigan. This is not an official university website. We do not use the university’s logos, photos or brand colors, and nothing here should be read as a statement by the university. For authoritative, current information, go to umich.edu, the Office of the Registrar and the Office of Financial Aid.
What this site is
Ann Arbor Tuition Ledger is a small, independent reference on one question: what it costs an out-of-state student to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The university publishes its figures across several offices, including the Registrar’s rate search, the Office of Financial Aid’s cost budgets, Michigan Housing’s room and board tables and the Regents’ budget documents. We bring those numbers together in one place, put them in comparable tables, do the arithmetic families usually end up doing by hand, and explain the rules on residency and aid in plain language.
Who runs it
The site is written and maintained by the Ann Arbor Tuition Ledger Editorial Team. We are not university staff, admissions consultants or financial advisers, and we do not sell services to students or families. We do not publish author bios because the site is a team-maintained reference, not a personal blog.
How we check facts
- Official sources first. Every tuition, fee and cost figure is taken from a University of Michigan page or document, which we list in a Sources section at the end of each article.
- Cross-checking. Where two official sources cover the same number, we compare them. For 2026–27, the Registrar’s full-time tuition plus the $246.89 mandatory fees matches the Regents’ fee schedule and the Office of Financial Aid’s budget for every rate group we publish.
- Stated academic year. Every figure is labeled with the academic year it applies to. Current pages use 2026–27 rates, approved by the Board of Regents on June 25, 2026.
- Our own arithmetic is shown. Annual totals, gaps and four-year figures are calculated by us from the official per-term rates, and we show the calculation where it is not obvious.
- No guessing. If we cannot verify something, such as typical off-campus rent or average aid for nonresidents, we say so rather than publish an estimate.

Updates and corrections
Tuition at U-M is set each June. We review the site after each Regents decision and whenever an official source changes. If you spot an error, please email us through the contact page with a link to the official source, and we will correct it.
